By the end of December, the anti-Japanese boycott in Shanghai had become massive and confused. There were fights between Chinese protestors and the Japanese military based in the Shanghai International Settlement. In the middle of January 1932, weeks into Fanny’s first term, five Japanese monks were assaulted in Shanghai, one of them so severely that he died of his injuries.

The Japanese demanded an apology and compensation from Shanghai’s municipal authority, though it was becoming clear that members of the Japanese military had instigated the fracas themselves, paying Chinese hoodlums to ambush the monks.15 Nonetheless, the Shanghai council agreed to all the demands.

Of course this did nothing to appease the Japanese. The very next day they bombed Shanghai. They did not stop.
